With 126 vacancies for every 100 people, a challenge to find great people is an understatement. So why try at all.

There is an army of recruiters approaching people non-stop to then go and sell them to you. It can be a short term solution to a long term problem. Instead, let people come to you. If you are short of applicants, you have a branding problem. An employer branding problem.

#1

Sell benefits, not features. Yes, SELL. People have options and your company is one of many. You have to stand out and tell them how working for you will change their lives.

Feature: Flexible hours

Benefit: no shame when you go to the gym midday or pick up your kid from school

#2

Be authentic. Most of the time, this means creating an employee experience that is consistent. Because it is about attracting people to have them apply in the first place, the part you’ll want to focus on is copy. Also known as your voice. Start with defining how you want to come across in written word. Is it ambitious, is it inclusive, is it adventurous? Define and be consistent.

#3

Create content. Show people what’s going on in your company. Every business needs to consider themselves a media company. If you’re not making content, you will lose the war for talent. Give them a glimpse into their potential new employer. Who knows, they might apply one day.

If you are neglecting the employer brand, you are potentially robbing someone of finding their dream job.
